-The way that you would preview a novel is by reading the back. The reason I say you should read the back is because the back is a little summary of the whole book.
You can go online and look up summaries about the story or find and read other people's reviews of a book. Their opinion, what was the main plot, comparisons to other books and etc...
Skim through the book, maybe read the first few pages. I always pick a random spot in the book and read for a little while, If I get into it then I read it. Also never judge a book by its cover. really.

To preview a novel I usually just read the text that's on the jacket. I don't usually read books that I have heard nothing about, unless they seem particularly interesting looking. I also sometimes look the book up on the internet to see what it's about and to see what critics said about it.
